Week 1 Science Methods II

The big question that we addressed in the lab was "How can we ensure that a race is exciting by having them finish at about the same time?"
My group discussed how we could model the race to make sure it was fun but also fair for each student. We decided having a one-legged race would be fun but also challenging for each student because it would be more difficult to jump on one leg compared to running normally. It could increase the chances of both students finishing around the same time. We created an 8-foot course and each started on one end. We wanted to compare our times to see how fast each one of us went to determine the head start the other would need. Megan and Hannah went first, and Megan was the fastest. Next, Olga and I raced, and I was the fastest between the two of us. Lastly, Megan and I raced, and Megan beat me. We did notice that in each race we were ending close to the other. We lastly raced the other group. Megan and Caleb raced and Caleb got the head start because their method of racing(walking) was slower than our method(one-legged).

To communicate clearly about motion, we need standard units
Speed measures how far something moves in a certain time
Position gives the location of an object relative to some reference point
Measuring the position and motion of an object allows us to predict where it will be in the future

I learned that to describe a position, we need two pieces of information. We need the distance and direction. With distance, we need to have a reference point to get where we are. To get direction, we need to travel to the reference point to get to where we are. With this, we need to know the units of measurement we are using; miles vs kilometers, etc. I also learned that to calculate speed we need the distance divided by time. Velocity is determined by taking the change in position divided by time. Acceleration is determined by taking the change in velocity divided by the time. Speed is how fast something is moving and velocity is how fast and what direction something is moving. Acceleration measures how fast velocity changes
The most helpful was the videos provided in the book. They helped describe what the text was saying. Videos help me so much with the learning process.
I would like more problems like what we did in the lecture to use the different equations of finding the speed, velocity, and acceleration.
